Matthew Hale, Ph.D.Matthew Hale, Ph.D.

Associate Professor and M.P.A. Program Chair
Department of Political Science and Public Affairs

Matthew Hale’s research focuses on how the media covers the public and nonprofit sectors. His interest in politics precedes his academic life; he served as an aide to California Senator Barbara Boxer and worked for several local, state and national political campaigns in press and candidate advance operations. He has appeared in popular media venues such as CNN, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

“Next Generation Media: The Decline of Old Media and the Rise of New Democracy”

Professional political campaigners now use "big data" and advanced marketing metrics to identify voters — and drive people to the polls. Hale will examine these new techniques and explore the implications for our democracy.
